Eco-Travel: Eco-Friendly Forest Hut

Feel like getting back to basics, and reconnecting with nature? You can stay in the middle of nowhere in a hut without electricity or running water. In Kolabyn, which is a few hours drive from Stockholm, and just 45 from the Stockholm’s Vasteras Airport, you will find 11 forest huts scattered around Lake Skarsjon. Each hut sleeps two, underneath warm sheep skin covers. There is also a wood heater, but you will be the one gathering wood to burn, and if you gather enough wood you may have some left over to light the sauna. Food preparation is done on an open fire, and although there are some plates and cutlery provided most people bring their own. For your food supplies the nearest supermarket is in Skinnskatteberg, 3km away and open from 8am to 8pm. After your grilled dinner put the kettle on the fire for a cuppa, and have some blackberries which you can gather from the many blackberry bushes surrounding the huts. The toilets are also el fresco, but have been made as comfortable as possible. At night candles are lite and you can cuddle down together under the sheep skins and listen out for forest animals, which include moose and wolves. The place is child friendly.
Getting there:
Train from Stockholm to Koping, and from there a public bus to Skinnskatteberg where the Kolabyn team can pick you up. Alternatively drive from Stockholm or the Stockholm airport.
Average of $100 a night per hut
Self catering.
There are a number of tours and safaris, including moose wolf and beaver safaris.
