Gold Room Mosaic, Stockholm

Sweden, Stockhom City Hall

This is part of the byzantine style mosaic in the Gold Room in the Stockholm City Hall. The Nobel Prize is awarded in the City Hall and the guests have a ball here after the dinner. The building was completed in 1923 but I’m not sure when the mosaic was completed. However apart from the images depicting famous moments in Swedish history this little scene which I have photographed shows symbols of the USA. It seems so incongruous in this very European setting and in such an old style mosaic to find the USA. Look closely and you can see the Statue of Liberty, skyscrapers and even the flag.

Such a beautiful work of art wasted on a stuffy governmnet building but step outside the City Hall and there is the beautiful sea.

There is so much to see in Stokholm outdoors, like the boat trips and the many parks that this isn’t one of my favorite sites. I’d rather spend my time shopping, in teh parks or the more exciting museums.

Interesting blog! I’ve been here as well and although I found the building stunning the guide was a bit boring. Also at first we got completely lost trying to find the building.
