This is part of the byzantine style Golden Hall mosaic Stockholm City Hall. The Nobel Prize is awarded in the City Hall and the guests have a ball here after their dinner. The building was completed in 1923. The Golden Hall got its name from the brilliant gold mosaic created by Einar Forseth in 1921-23. The Golden Hall (Gyllene Salen ) was originally stone and granite. After a hefty donation by an anonymous donor, the hall was renovated and the granite and stone walls replaced with the beautiful mosaic. The Golden Hall mosaic Stockholm covers all wall surfaces in the hall. The mosaic was installed by a professional mosaic company.

What Does the Golden Hall Mosaic Stockholm Depict?

The mosaic shows the allegories of famous people and events from Swedish history. The type of the mosaic is Byzantine but the depicted subjects are quite modern. Among the mosaic images are symbols of the USA. It seems so incongruous in this very European setting and in such an old-style mosaic. Look closely and you can see the Statue of Liberty, skyscrapers, and even the flag.

SWEDEN: Stockholm, City Hall

One of the images is of the Queen of Lake Malar and in her lap is the city of Stockholm. Stockholm is located between Lake Malar and the Baltic Sea. This refers to the poetic name for Stockholm – Mälardrottningen. Other images include the Katarina Elevator, Stockholm Harbor,  Riddarholmen Church and Tre Kronor Castle. Even the Stockholm City Hall is depicted! One of the quirky things about the Golden Hall mosaic Stockholm is the image of Saint Erik riding a horse. The mosaic was started too close to the ceiling and so his head had to be left off!

Interesting blog! I’ve been here as well and although I found the building stunning the guide was a bit boring. Also at first we got completely lost trying to find the building.

There is so much to see in Stokholm outdoors, like the boat trips and the many parks that this isn’t one of my favorite sites. I’d rather spend my time shopping, in teh parks or the more exciting museums.

Such a beautiful work of art wasted on a stuffy governmnet building but step outside the City Hall and there is the beautiful sea.
