This may be a crude travel experience but it’s certainly unique, and not what you’d expect to find in Iceland. The Museum of Phallology gives new meaning to “Free Willie.” The Penis Museum in Iceland exhibits penises and penile parts. The museum contains over 300 specimens belonging to almost all land and sea mammals found in Iceland, and some from around the world. For example a 2mm hamster penis, an elephant’s willie, and a 1.7-meter sperm whale pickled pecker.
Phallological Museum?
The Penis Museum in Iceland was founded by Sigurour Hjartarson, a former history teacher. The first penis collected was from a whaling station and was given to Sigurour by a friend. It started as a bit of a joke, with Mr. Hjartarson having penises out to dry. The collection grew as people knew the right man to give any unusual penis to was the history teacher, Hjartarson. The subject is taken seriously, with some tongue-in-cheek exhibits. In addition to the phallic displays, there are exerts from Moby Dick, a bow tie made from a whale’s foreskin and scrotum lamps.
What to See at the Penis Museum in Iceland?
All penis displays are in jars of formaldehyde or “mounted” on the walls. There’s also a display of assorted penile paraphernalia, artistic oddments and practical utensils. You can see toothpeckers, walking “boner” sticks, coat (well) hangers and scrotum bags. It may be “hard” to believe but there are also an elf, troll and a sea-monster’s privates on display. There is in fact one human exhibit that was bequeathed to the museum. A pickled penis donated by a 96-year-old man who claimed he had bedded over 300 women. Several human specimens have been promised to the museum by proud “boner-fied” science enthusiasts. These potential donors wish to be remembered as “upstanding” citizens of the community. That’s pretty much the long and the short of it.
What Else Is There at the Penis Museum?
The museum has recently expanded and added a cafe/bisto with phallic-themed food and drinks. There are also some new interactive exhibits. The penes on display come from 115 species. For many years the museum was out of Reykjavik and a little difficult to reach. Now it is in a new, larger building in Reykjavik. It’s not hard to find just ask for erections…ah…directions.
