6-Day Tbilisi Itinerary for a Jewish Religious Family

Exploring Tbilisi: A 6-Day Itinerary

Welcome to Tbilisi, the vibrant capital of Georgia, where history and culture blend seamlessly with modernity. Whether you’re traveling as a family, a couple, or solo, this comprehensive itinerary will guide you through the best of Tbilisi, ensuring you experience its rich heritage, stunning landscapes, and delightful cuisine. While the original itinerary was tailored for observant Jewish travelers, the following plan is perfect for anyone seeking an unforgettable one week adventure.

Day 1: Introduction to Tbilisi

Hotel of Choice: Zeg Hotel

Begin your journey by checking in at the Zeg Hotel, strategically located for easy access to various attractions. It is located in the historic Old Town. This comfortable hotel offers impeccable service and is especially suitable for those wanting proximity to the Chabad Tbilisi community.

Morning: Bridge of Peace, Rike Park, Queen Darejan Palace Balcony

Embark on a leisurely walk across the iconic Bridge of Peace, admiring its architectural beauty. Continue to Rike Park, a serene oasis in the heart of the city. Don’t miss the chance to visit the balcony of Queen Darejan Palace for panoramic views.

Afternoon: Fortress and Mother of Georgia Statue, Botanical Gardens

Take the cable car from Rike Park to the Narikala Fortress and the imposing statue of Mother of Georgia. Enjoy the breathtaking vistas of Tbilisi from this vantage point. You’ll find the fortress to your left as you exit the cable car, as well as the entrance to the Botanical Gardens. On the right will be the statue. Explore the Botanical Gardens before descending by cable car or taxi. Savor a kosher lunch at Mendy’s.

Evening: Museum Visits and River Cruise

Continue this Tbilisi itinerary with a visit to the Museum of History and Art of Jews in Georgia, and the Illusion Museum for an interactive experience. Stroll through Meidan Bazaar, immersing yourself in local culture. Conclude the day with a relaxing river cruise along the Mtkvari River, offering a unique perspective of the cityscape. You can check the availability of the cruise here:

Day 2: Exploring the Countryside

Morning: Countryside Excursion

Escape the city’s hustle and bustle and venture into the Georgian countryside. Opt for one of two popular day trips: the Military Highway route or the trip to the picturesque town of Mtskheta. Enjoy scenic beauty, cultural insights, and the chance to participate in extreme activities if desired.

Language Assistance

If you’re visiting from Israel, consider hiring a Hebrew-speaking guide. Otherwise, most guides in Tbilisi are fluent in Georgian, Russian, and English. Similarly, if you are a kosher observer, you won’t want to take the food tours or wine tours that are also popular from Tbilisi.

Day 3: Retail Therapy and Leisure

Morning: Liberty Square and Shopping

Experience a day of leisure by starting at Liberty Square. Admire the surrounding buildings and indulge in some retail therapy at the Galleria Tbilisi Mall. Load up on unique souvenirs and local products. Although Galleria is not the cheapest mall in Tbilisi, it is the most convenient. If you’re looking for good prices rather opt for East Point or Lilo Mall. Pro Tip: Watch out for street urchins who hang around the entrance to Galleria, and “make friends” with you as they clean out your pockets.

Pamper Yourself

No Tbilisi itinerary is complete without some downtime spent at a traditional hammam. Visit one of the bathhouses for an hour of relaxation in the sauna, and sulfur pools. My recommendation is Orbeliani. Pro Tips: Arrive on time. Don’t overstay your hour or you’ll end up paying for the extra hour. Towels, slippers, and brushes can be bought for a few Liri at the bath. Order some tea. Clothing is optional because all the rooms in this bathhouse are private. Order a “kisa” a traditional scrub that lasts about 15 minutes and costs about 20 Liri.

End the day by joining other Jewish visitors at the Great Synagogue, before enjoying a Friday night Shabbat meal at Chabad House, just a minute from your hotel.

Day 4: Cultural Immersion and Exploration

Morning: Synagogue and Chabad Tbilisi Experience

Begin your morning with religious activities, attending a synagogue service and enjoying breakfast at Chabad Tbilisi. Opt for the free guided tour of the Old Town that Chabad offers its guests in winter, or explore the Old Town independently.

Day 5: Fun and Adventure

Morning: Funicular and Amusement Park

Ride the funicular (not the same one that you rode on day 1) to the amusement park for a day of family-friendly fun. Enjoy thrilling rides, games, and delectable snacks.

Day 6: Heritage, Spirituality, Shopping (Tbilisi Itinerary last day!)

Morning: Chronicles of Georgia and Tbilisi Mall

Start the 6th day of this Tbilisi itinerary with a visit to the monumental Chronicles of Georgia monument, a testament to the country’s history. Explore the Tbilisi Mall for shopping and entertainment.

Afternoon: Ethnographic Open-Air Museum and Trinity Church

Immerse yourself in Georgia’s diverse heritage at the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum. Discover traditional architecture and lifestyle. Complete your journey with a visit to the Trinity Church, an architectural marvel.
