Should You Jump the Waimea Beach Rock?
When in Hawaii there is no shortage of beautiful beaches, but the Waimea Bay Beach has the added attraction of having a world-famous rock you can jump off of! The Big Rock at Waimea Beach juts out into the crystal clear water, and anyone can climb it and jump off at their own risk. Join the locals and visitors as they somersault, jump and dive the 40 feet Waimea Beach rock into the water. You have to time your jump so that you don’t jump into a wave-trough, and make sure you do it only at high tide.
What to Do at Waimea?
In addition to the rock, you have a wide sand beach with all the amenities – lifeguard, showers, toilets, parking and recreational activities. The beach is family-friendly and visited by locals and tourists alike, although not a crowded beach. The beach is famous for the huge waves, especially in the winter, although in summer it can be flat and calm. At all times of the year, you need to take heed of any warnings from the lifeguards. Many famous surf competitions are held here, like the “Eddie”, and the beach is also ideal for S.C.U.B.A. diving and snorkeling, as well as rock climbing and exploring the dry cave in the black rocks that surround the beach. January-March you can spot whales from the cliff tops, and many come to simply see the enormous waves in the winter, or to avoid the crowds of Waikiki. You can also visit Waimea Falls Park waterfall with a lagoon at its base, which is close by.
The beach is also well known as one of the locations from the series “Lost”, and the films “Jurassic Park”, “Endless Summer” and some Elvis films. It was also the first place contact was made between foreigners and Hawaiians.
