Lithuania is no longer as inaccessible as it was even a few years ago. In fact if you are in one of the neighboring countries it is a short train ride to this unique country. If you go to the trouble of coming to Lithuania then why not see something unusual that you would not find in any other country – the Devil’s Museum Kaunas – Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis Velnių Muziejus.
Devil’s Museum Kaunas Lithuania
The three-story Devil’s Museum in Kaunas exhibits around 3000 devil related displays in a building fittingly eery decorated in red and black. Although the devil is and has been feared or revered among many cultures throughout the world, belief in the existence of the devil in Eastern Europe goes back centuries and the character of the devil appears in much Eastern European folklore. Pagan beliefs hung on in Lithuania until the early 19th century.
Devil Art, Folklore and Traditional Crafts
The devil figures, art, and objects have been gathered from many cultures around the world, and the devil’s portrayal varies from display to display. There is even one of Hitler and Stalin as devils dividing up Lithuania. Other exhibits show the devil in various forms and in various media, the devil appears on everyday objects as well as depicting old myths and religious beliefs. Visitors are invited to contribute a piece of devil “art” from their own culture, to the museum.
