Each of the 50 plaque features a common hero that died under weird or unusual circumstances. Many of the commemorated heroes worked at a profession that no longer exists. As you go from one plaque to the next the tragic tales become more fantastical. You find yourself waiting with bated breath to read about the next sad and disastrous death.
The Story Behind Postman’s Park
In 1887 George Frederick Watts decided to create this Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice in honor of Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee. The memorial commemorates heroic men and women who lost their lives to save another. The memorial stands in a corner of the park, under a small shelter, and can be easily missed. The name of the park commemorates the postmen who worked at the principal London post office and the former sorting office in King Edward Street, who were accustomed to eating their lunch here.
The park is conveniently close to the center and easily reachable. Postman’s Park London lies between King Edward Street, Little Britain and Angel Street, near St Bartholomew’s Hospital, to the north of St Paul’s Cathedral. The side entrance to The Guild & Ward Church of St. Botolph-Without-Aldersgate faces the park and has stood on this site for nearly a thousand years. So the next time you are in London, have your picnic lunch in this tranquil setting, away from the madding crowds.

A short walk north from St. Paul’s Cathedral. Closest tube “St. Paul’s”. Alternatively “Barbican” on the Circle Line. There are 2 entrances via Aldersgate Street or King Edward Street.
