Whether you’re just passing through or have a long layover, Dubai International Airport has some fantastic Dubai Airport tips to make your journey more enjoyable. My top tips to elevate your DXB experience come from a recent 12 hour layover in DXB. Please, learn from my experience!
1. Dubai Duty-Free Shopping Hack
Did you know that Dubai Airport has Duty-Free stores scattered throughout its terminals? While all gates—A, B, and C—offer excellent shopping, the largest Duty-Free shopping area is by the B Gates. Follow the signs to B Gates, and you’ll find a massive array of stores ranging from Victoria’s Secret to Gucci as well as a food court, Starbucks, and mani-pedi place. Whether you’re shopping for luxury brands or last-minute travel essentials, this is the spot to hit!
2. Free Golf Cart Transport in DXB
Ever envied those golf carts zipping through airports? At DXB, you can get a free ride! While some carts are reserved for elderly passengers or those with mobility needs, keep an eye out for the yellow golf carts marked “Taxi DXB Free Ride.” These roam the Duty-Free area between departure gates and offer a convenient way to save time (and your feet!). Just flag one down, hop on, and enjoy the ride—it’s completely free. (And virtually no one knows about this Dubai Airport tips)
3. Get a Free SIM Card at Dubai Airport
Upon arrival at passport control, you’ll be handed a free local SIM card—yes, free! This is a lifesaver if you’re staying in Dubai or even just on a layover. The SIM comes preloaded with 10GB of data, ensuring you stay connected while exploring. This is especially handy if your current SIM doesn’t work in Dubai. Pop it into your phone, and you’re good to go!
This is especially useful if you have a connecting flight in Dubai with a long layover and you’ve only invested in a SIM card for your final destination. That SIM won’t work in Dubai, but luckily you can pop the free Dubai SIM into your phone and enjoy 10GB while you’re there.
4. Dubai Metro: Your Layover Adventure Starts Here
Got a layover of at least 7 hours? Venture out of the airport and explore the city easily with the Dubai Metro Red Line, which connects both DXB terminals to the heart of the city. Honestly this is the best of the Dubai Airport tips!
- How to do it: Follow the signs to the metro station and purchase a Tourist Day Ticket for just 22 AED. This gives you unlimited travel across all metro zones for the day.
- Where to go: Start with the Dubai Mall, which is directly accessible via the Red Line. Here, you can marvel at the Burj Khalifa, watch the dancing fountains, and explore the sprawling mall. And if you have no choice but to cart luggage aroudn with you, Dubai Mall has a place where you can store luggage for free! (read about Free Dubai Luggage Storage)
- Hot tip: Sit on the left-hand side of the metro for views of the Dubai Frame, Museum of the Future, and other iconic landmarks.
While a 5-hour layover might feel tight, I recommend allowing at least 7 hours to explore comfortably.
