If you’re in Maine, USA, and looking for something wacky to do then visit this very unique Maine museum where you can see the world’s largest collection of umbrella covers. An umbrella cover is a material sleeve that is pulled over an umbrella to keep it together when it’s not in use. At the Umbrella Cover Museum Maine, owner Nancy 3 Hoffman, began collecting umbrella covers when she found she had a few spare ones lying about the house. The collection grew until it reached an incredible 730 covers of every color, pattern, shape and size. Each umbrella cover has a special story and history and there are covers from 44 countries around the world.

When: The museum is open in the summer months until Labor Day from 10 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm. It is closed on Monday and Sunday afternoons.

Getting There: take one of the Casco Bay ferries from Portland, the ferry ride takes about 20 minutes. The museum is a 5-minute walk from the ferry landing, just go up the hill and turn left.

Since its inception, the charming museum has continued to grow, collecting umbrella covers from over 44 countries around the world. In total, the museum now houses over 700 umbrella covers of all shapes and sizes ranging from doll accessories to patio furniture sized covers. Hoffman’s strange accomplishment has even been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest umbrella cover collection in the world.
