When I was choosing a Marrakech riad I found myself torn between wanting all the creature comforts and an authentic experience. Most of the Marrakech hotels I saw online seemed geared towards tourists and duplicating Western hotels. In Marrakech’s generic tourist hotels, you could literally be anywhere in the world.
I wanted to feel like I was in Morocco, and experience the local culture but still have a comfortable bed, clean bathroom, and safe environment. I found all that and more at Riad Kaiss.
Why Riad Kaiss is the Perfect Marrakech Riad Hotel
This picturesque Marrakech riad has a long and colorful history. It has maintained its traditional architecture, including arched doorways, painted floor tiles, and an inner courtyard. The courtyard will take your breath away. A fountain stands in the center, with lush plants and tall trees giving shade to the seating areas below. Alcoves around the courtyard offer a place to have a tate-a-tate or a cup of mint tea.
Each of the nine guest rooms is a unique gem decorated with elegant authentic yet minimalistic furnishings. Although all the rooms are great, I have to single out the rooftop suite. If you can afford it, this is the suite you should book. A steep winding staircase leads up to an entrance area, open sun terrace, and luxurious bedroom. From the terrace, you can look out across the rooftops and the trees in the courtyard. This is a very private, large suite.
Riad Kaiss Location
Many areas of the Marrakesh Medina are pedestrian-only, so it is an added bonus that Riad Kaiss is close to one of the gate entrance points. If your taxi (or airport transfer arranged through the riad) drops you off here, you’ll be met by the riad’s porter who comes with a cart to carry your luggage and lead you to Riad Kaiss.
This drop-off point is a public square (Place des Ferblantiers), and entrance to the Jewish Quarter (Mellah). Riad Kaiss is also only a short walk from the Medina’s main square, Jemaa el-Fna. The simple route along one street will lead you to Jemma el-Fna. And the street is lined with interesting stores where there is less pressure to buy than in other areas of the Medina. This is a safe area of the Medina, and the riad is down a quiet lane so you won’t be disturbed by noise.
Riad Kaiss Service
The staff is willing to help arrange airport transfers, give you directions, recommend restaurants, tell you where you can change money at the best rate, show you a map and where the attractions are, recommend where you can buy real saffron/argon oil, and not the fake stuff, and even help find a place to do a PCR test in Marrakech.
You’ll get a warm welcome from the Riad Kaiss “family” with a cup of mint tea, and you might even get to meet the incredible hotel manager, Leanne.
Riad Kaiss Rooms
The room types include superior rooms, deluxe double rooms, and deluxe twin rooms. The suites are large and include a private terrace. Each room is exquisitely decorated with taste.
It’s the small touches that make all the difference, such as the fresh fruit and cool water, the sublime signature bath products, and the unique ornaments in each room.
This is the kind of Marrakech riad where you regret not having an extra day to simply hang out at the hotel.
Dining at the Best Marrakech Riad
Enjoy a traditional Moroccan breakfast, served in the courtyard, or your room. The riad makes many of its food products from scratch including jams, pastries, and yogurts. the menu changes with the seasons and available fresh (usually organic) ingredients. You can opt for a romantic private dining experience in one of the cozy corners of the main courtyard. The hotel’s sister hotel, Dar Anika also offers chef-cooked meals. And of course, Riad Kaiss serves traditional Moroccan dishes like Cous Cous and Tangine.
