Want to See a Massive Work of Paris Street Art?
What is Chuuutt?
Well, actually Chuuutt is a stencil mural, a very big and beautiful, work of Paris street art. Situated in Place Igor-Stravinsky in the 4th arrondissement, close to the Pompidou Center, Paris, the mural faces the Niki de Saint Phalle Fountain (Stravinsky Fountain or Fontaine des automates). This piece of Paris street art was created in June 2011 by Jef Aerosol (Jean-Francois Perroy) a renowned French stencil graffiti artist. Chuuutt (which means Shhh or listen) was painted as part of the Mur4Mur project which aimed to promote accessible contemporary art in this historic district of the City of Light. The mural served another purpose. It also covered up unsightly tags and graffiti.
Chuuuttt! or Ssshhh! shows the white face of a man holding a finger up to his lips to silence passes by. It is meant to promote a moment of quiet in this busy and fast-moving area. To offer a moment’s break in the noise. The work took 4 days to do, used 200 spray cans, and 6 artists, and covered 350m² of wall space. Chuuutt is 22 meters high and 14 meters wide. Spot the small red arrow under the eye of the character in the mural. This is Jef Aerosol’s signature. You may think the Chuuutt character looks a bit like Salvador Dali but in fact it is a self-portrait by the artist.
While enjoying the Paris street art, see the interesting fountain as well!
The mural is on the white wall you see on the right of the photo.
You can find other works by Jef Aérosol in the USA, Tokyo, Beijing, and other cities. Jef Aérosol (whose real name is Jean-Francois Perroy) was a pioneer in French street stencil art; creating his first recognized work in 82′ in Tours, France. See if you can find any more of his work in Paris! And here are more unusual things to see in Paris.
