I Love You Wall,- Paris

I Love You The Wall Paris March 28 2011

The I Love You wall (Le mur des je t’aime) was created by Frédéric Baron and Claire Kito. It was inspired by love messages carved in tree trunks around Paris. As these messages won’t last on trees he decided to bring them all together on a permanent wall. Together with a calligrapher, Baron had the words engraved on dark blue glazed lava tiles. The blue perhaps represents the sky and all of humanity’s love spread across it. Then there are some red pieces which are perhaps the human heart which has been broken so often. The artists wanted the wall to be a place for lovers to meet and declare their feelings to one another. The wall is 416 square feet (38.6m) and has 612 tiles.

The Universality of Love

Words on the I Love You wall are in 311 languages and dialects. Frédéric Baron collected the “I love you” phrases friends and foreign embassies in Paris.  At first, the love messages were collected in three notebooks. Eventually, the notebooks were filled with over 1000 declarations of love. The I Love You wall in Paris is a popular place for lovers to go and declare their love for one another.

Why is this Monument to Love on a Wall?

The many declarations of love in languages from across the globe are ironically written on a wall. Walls block us off, separate nations, and symbolize barriers and obstacles. Yet here at the I Love You wall, it is transformed into a symbol of universal love.
