Fish and Chips – British Travel Experience

There is nothing more British than Fish n’ Chips, I don’t care what you say, the queen, Big Ben, double-decker buses, none come close to the old fish and chips. A few years back I was in England with 3 of my kids and we ate fish and chips for a week solid and never got sick of it. How to enjoy this tradition like the locals? These days they are wrapped first in wax paper and then in newspaper because of poisoning from the ink in the newspaper, but you have to eat them out of paper.

Get take away and eat them out of the newspaper, balanced on your knees, on the street, park bench, or train. Also, smother the chips in vinegar and a little salt. Fresh, almost healthy, nutritious, and extremely British.

See here for London’s best fish and chip restaurants. Actually, in my opinion, if you’re calling it a “restaurant” it’s already lost its authenticity. Just look for a good old-fashioned fish and chip shop, with no frills. You don’t need a sprig of parsley or even a knife and fork. But the shop should look clean of course, and busy. Try a pickled onion on the side or if you have the courage try a pickled egg. For me any clean Fish & Chip shop, that doesn’t look too greasy, where they wrap the meal up in newspaper, is good enough for me!

Of course, don’t forget to try Britain’s most popular food – curry. You can get the best London curries in Brick Lane.
